Before you employ a contractor, enter into any contract or part with any money, read this first!
  Make sure you ask  
1 Make sure you verify the company name, address, landline, mobile, email and website tick
2 Check how long they have been trading and what experience they have in this type of work tick
3 Ask for proof of any accreditation, trade memberships or qualifications they are displaying tick
4 Verify they have Public liability insurance, accidental damage and professional indemnity cover tick
5 Check they provide a written quotation, how long it is valid for and if there is a cooling off period tick

6 Ask for references and contact details from previous satisfied customers that you can verify tick
7 Check all materials are included, agree acceptable terms for deposits and interim payments tick
8 Confirm a start and approximate completion date and check if any subcontractors will be used tick
9 Will they need to clear rooms, move furniture, lift floors or chase walls to complete the work? tick
10 Check if all or part of the work requires Part P submission to comply with Building Regulations tick
  Make sure you book your approved contractor  
11 Confirm all chasing will be made good, carpets and furniture replaced and all rubbish disposed of tick
12 Check the duration of your guarantee or warranty and any relevant electrical certification issued tick
13 Check if the electricity supply needs to be isolated or if certain circuits will need disconnecting tick
14 When you make a payment ask for a receipt or a signature/date on your copy of the quotation tick
15 Double check the quotation for all labour costs, agreed materials and fittings and VAT if applicable tick
